From Stripper to Glory. The Only Woman In History To Win The Grammy Award For Best Rap Album As A Solo Artist | Cardi B

It doesn’t matter where you start. It only matters where you finish. Cardi B, real name Belcalis Marlenis Almanzar, was born on 11 October 1992. She is a Caribbean-American rapper, singer, songwriter, actress and television personality.

She is the daughter of a Dominican father and a Trinidadian Spanish mother. With her unmistakable Caribbean accent which she says she adopted from her paternal grandmother with who she spent most of her earlier years,  Cardi was raised in The Bronx, New York City, which contains the poorest congressional district in the United States, the 15th.

She attended Renaissance High School for Musical Theatre and Technology. Though she says she would not encourage people to join gangs, she became a gang member at the age of 16. She worked at an Amish Market in Tribeca before she began stripping at the age of 19. Fired from her supermarket job, the manager said that she should rather go and work at a strip club, and she did.

Even in her present success, Cardi B says that becoming a stripper saved her from a lot of things. It allowed her to go back to school. She says that she became a stripper as a way escape poverty and domestic violence. She was in an abusive relationship and lied to her mother that she was making money babysitting. She said she gathered that with her options stripping was the only way to escape her difficult circumstances and pay for her education. She attended Borough of Manhattan Community College.

Her stage name was derived from her previous nickname “Barcadi”, which is a well known global rum brand.

She says everybody needs to do what they can to get a job because working makes you happy, and you should prove all the people who look down on you wrong.

She said that in her early days she went to every radio station in New York repeatedly with her mix-tape repeatedly networking and asking for them to listen to her music and give her opportunities.

Cardi B started to gain publicity in 2013 through social media as some of her videos and posts started spreading virally especially on Vine and Instagram. In 2015, she earned a break after she was drafted into the VH1 Reality Television Series “Love and Hip Hop, Season 6”. After two successful seasons, at the end of 2016, she announced that she would be leaving to pursue a career in music full time.

She is a relentless worker and pouring her heart into music, in the past three years, Cardi B has won a Grammy Award, seven Billboard Music Awards, nine BET Hip Hop Awards, an ASCAP Songwriter of the Year Award, three American Music Awards, three MTV Video Music Awards, and two Guinness World Records.

With her hit Bodak Yellow, she became the second female rapper to top the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart with a solo since Lauryn Hill in 1998. She is the 6th female in all categories to achieve three number one singles on the Chart during the 2010s. Her debut studio album, “Invasion of Privacy”, released in 2018, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, broke several streaming records and was certified tripple platinum by RIAA. She is the only woman to win the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album as a solo artist. In 2018, Time Magazine listed her as one of the top 100 most influential people in the world.

Not too bad a run for a Caribbean girl from the Bronx.
