5 Year Old Girl Swam A Hundred Metres and Did A Triathlon To Raise Money For Injured Veteran Soldiers, Then She Got To Connect With A Real Veteran | Video

2 min read

Little 5 and half year old, Temperance Pattinson, or Tempy as others call her, from Darlington, United Kingdom, swam a hundred metres and did a triathlon to help raise money for veteran soldiers in need of help. She recently had an opportunity to meet one of the veterans who have benefited from efforts and sacrifices of ordinary citizens like her.

In the triathlon, Tempy had to run a marathon, swim a hundred metres and ride a bike despite her great fear of riding.

She went into conversation with Simon Brown, a British soldier, who was injured in 2006 on a rescue mission in Iraq. He was shot in the face by a sniper and the bullet went through one side of his face and came out the other side. This tore through his nerves, and though he ultimately survived, he became totally blind. In his new reality, he had to rebuild his life again. His face had to be restored and he had to start life again as a blind man. He credits much of his recovery to the help he received from the contributions of civilians like Tempy.

Often we fear the worst, but I have seen many people like Simon who thought their lives would go in a certain direction, and then after a tragic occurrence, got redirected. The marks on his face are unmissable but so is the grace that he exudes even after having gone through this horrific experience.

It was amazing to see how in the conversation, little Tempy, at only 5, seemed to appreciate fully the contribution of the soldiers to her own life and being, and how this also pushed her to challenge herself.

I genuinely believe that sometimes kids are given strong virtues and clarity that many adults never get to get and it’s for this very reason that they need to be supported and encouraged because if we do, we can be surprised by the things that come out of them.

I also believe that there is a lot of power in selfless and voluntary works of civilians towards real life causes and one must always push themselves to find ways that they can contribute meaningfully to different causes in our communities, countries and the world at large.

Today, Tempy continues to run various initiatives to help raise money for veterans. Just like she did, you get to decide the kind of impact and mark you would like to make in the world.
